about
Music traditional, lyrics/arrangement by Phil Dean
lyrics
Built up in Glasgow in '73
The Loch Ard was as graceful a ship you could see
A three-masted clipper, reckoned one of the best
By the Captain and crew who were boarding
They set sail from England March '78
They were bound for to Melbourne, that was not their fate
In June they bore down on the Cape Otway coast
But the fog had rolled in without warning
The ship hit a reef and the rigging crashed down
Near Mutton Bird Island Loch Ard ran aground
The masts they killed many, the sea got the rest
Death was out early that morning
Of fifty four passengers, two souls survived
Made it out of the depths barely alive
Eva Carmichael she clung to a spar
Five hours or more she spent calling
Tom Pearce was a crewman, he made it ashore
Heard Eva's cries and stole her from death's door
She collapsed from exhaustion, Tom ran for help
Because death was out early that morning
She lay on the sand, shivering cold
Waiting for darkness, the end to unfold
Numb from the shock of the morning's events
Wondering what did she do to deserve this?
Then Tom he returned and Eva was saved
But all of her family saw watery graves
Sitting together they silently prayed
Thanks to death that he spared them that morning
