In November 1940 he was born On Sheriff Street amongst the Dublin poor The Gods they smiled and blessed him well They gave him many tales to tell And a voice that could've stirred even the dead With a banjo and a song he hit the road Not caring for the wind, the rain, the snow His thick red beard grew wilder still To hear him sing gave such a thrill The hair rose on the back of yer neck With songs of liberty Of sailors on the open sea Of freedom's price, of tragedy He couldn't hide his majesty Everyone could tell he was the king of the balladeers Everywhere he'd play the venues they were packed But all too soon the Gods wanted him back A sickness took him much too young A little light went out the sun And the Earth cried when he died in '84 With songs of liberty Of girls and love and comedy Of passion and integrity Tales that end heroically Everybody knows that he's the king of the balladeers For what died this son of Roisin was it fame? Well it all began when Brian chased the Dane He showed us what it's like to see A king with true divinity And to him we owe allegiance to this day With songs of liberty Of soldiers, rebels, Connelly Of drinking, whoring, lunacy His voice a very symphony Of sailors on the open sea Of passion and integrity Everybody knows that he's the king of the balladeers

No Respect 02:50
We've been reasonable right from the start All we did was speak straight from the heart But you kicked us in the teeth And then you stole from our pockets All the while you kept a straight face While we tried to do the right thing By those no longer here at all Nobody would help us that's ok We'll stand here on our own and fight The right and wrong it's black and white But still you knocked us down Still you held your ground so callously Another year goes by And we're tired of all the travesties Does no one here have any heart at all? In the end we lost you beat us down We'd have got right up to fight again But there is nowhere left to turn You hold the aces And we're too poor to buy justice But one day you'll pay for all this And I hope it's goddam painful Maybe then you'll spare a thought For the lives that you have messed with For the children buried with no dignity And no respect at all

He held aloft the crown Struck from the head of the king The man we held so dear We couldn't hear the words We only saw the gestures But we sensed the mood and the fear We made to slip away Cast aside our uniforms And somehow make for home the best we could But there's no one now to trust Too many who would sell us out And now there's winter in my blood I feel the winter in my blood We passed the city gates At this time no one knew what was happening We headed to the west Running for our lives from what was sure to come The wrath that we all feared And I'm tired of the blood and the fear In days that came to pass We saw the vengeful horror That was suffered with glee upon our friends Well they haven't found me yet But I know my time is near I feel the cold, the winter in my blood I feel the winter in my blood

Once more we sail with a northerly gale Through the ice and sleet and rain I made it through alive it's true But I'll not be the same But we're homeward bound 'tis a damn fine sound With a good ship taut and free And I don't give a damn that I've not seen Them girls of old Maui I'll go to sea no more Once I'm back upon the shore Abandon hope and cut the ropes And go to sea no more Six long months of hell have passed And we ain't got far to roam It's a rough tough life full of trouble and strife And we're far away from home But we're homeward bound from the artic ground With a good ship taut and free And I don't give a damn that I never did see Them girls of old Maui I'll go to sea no more Once I'm back upon the shore Abandon hope and cut the ropes And go to sea no more Two weeks on land I was drunk and broke With soldiers on my tail I fled to the docks where a whaling ship Was ready to set sail So now I'm leaving land behind On a good ship taut and free With a following wind I may yet see Them girls of old Maui I'll go to sea once more For to hide me from the law Trust to hope, and knot the ropes And go to sea once more Yes I'll go to see once more Find my rest on foreign shores Trust to hope, and knot the ropes And go to sea once more

Far and wide as the eye can wander Heath and bog are everywhere Not a bird sings out to cheer us Oaks are standing gaunt and bare We are the peat bog soldiers Marching with our spades to the moor Up and down the guards are marching No one, no one can get through Flight would mean a sure death facing Guns and barbed wire block our view We're the peat bog soldiers Marching with our spades to the moor But for us there is no complaining Winter will in time be past One day we shall rise rejoicing Homeland dear, you're mine at last Then will the peat bogs soldiers, March no more with their spades to the moor

Standing aboard looking back to the shore Stood a sailor down on his luck Rueing the time when he lost his mind And then lost the lady he loved For many long years well he'd sailed far and near And he'd been drunk in every known port But his body was tiring, no longer aspiring To live where the memories would What I need is a rest, so he thought to himself Somewhere far away from the sea Where the grass it is green and the birds they do sing And there's ale to drink instead of grog I'll return to my country and hope for some mercy And there swap the ship for the horse Cos my soul it is tiring, no longer aspiring To be all the things it once could Well I've set me a course and this ship's gonna take me Exactly where I need to go I'm leaving these shores behind And the wind and the waves they will sweep me away Far from here to where I have come from I'm leaving these shores behind His small crew was broken, his ship it had seen better days But the wind it was good Free at long last from the chains of the docks Well she sailed with no trouble for months Then with home in sight in the first morning light She was dashed to a wreck on the rocks As his body lay dying his spirit was flying As free as the gulls up above Well I've set me a course and this ship's gonna take me Exactly where I need to go I'm leaving these shores behind

Arrows 03:30
I never picked you as that type But that’s no surprise at all Each time I think I’ve learned I’m put back in my place That’s the beauty of it all… Be the change you’d like to be Don’t be scared of us all Everything will come If we’re just prepared to wait That’s the beauty of it all… It wasn’t easy to detach But I’m feeling good overall If I never aim my arrows I can’t fail to hit the target That’s the beauty of it all… Well I’ll leave you with your life Seems like the wise thing to do And while you’re killing time Don’t forget That time is killing you…

On the day I arrived well they told me That I wasn't welcome at all On the day that I left well they wept For the soldiers that died for us all He said never complain of your lot For you chose it before you were born Something drops from the eyes that were long blind And now I stand enthralled In the year I was born well they said That the King, he would betray us all In the year that I wed well they murdered my friend And foretold my own fall He said never complain of your lot For you chose it before you were born Something drops from the eyes that were long blind And now I stand enthralled... In the hours of darkness I held fast to love And leapt over the wall In the hour of my death they'll still find me here Fighting and standing up tall He said never complain of your lot For you chose it before you were born Something drops from the eyes that were long blind And now I stand enthralled...
