about
Old Fid himself was a retired sailor from Norway who settled in Cornwall. The song's writer, Bill Lowndes, would see him every day, sitting on a bench staring out to sea, and got to know him and heard his story. The old man would look down at his hands and say "Look at 'em - every thumb a marlin-spike and every finger a fid". The "black girls" of Old Fid's memory were native Australians.
