about

Written & arranged by Phil Dean

lyrics

Three men came riding from the west with darkness in their eyes
Looking for a man they called John Green, for he must die
They shot him down and buried him with earth upon his head
Standing on his grave, they knew that Johnny Green was dead

They lingered by his grave until the rain began to fall
Then John Green’s head appeared, because he was not dead at all
He lay there ‘til the summer sun had nothing more to say
Standing straight and tall, he knew that this was John Green’s day

They hired men with knives that cut him down upon his knees
Kicked him to the floor, they tied him up, he couldn’t flee
“This time we’ll do it proper boy and this is just a start”
But Johnny Green was laughing when they shot him through the heart

Sharpening their blades, they tore the flesh right off the bone
Just to be quite sure, they ground him up between two stones
When the sun is here again, you know he’ll rise on up
For John Green’s soul it washed into the earth will all of his blood
